Romney Backs McCain, Secret Hopes of Brokered Convention Dashed
Mitt Romney endorsed John McCain, and asked his 286 delegates to support McCain.
John McCain currently has 827 delegates. If all Mitt Romney’s delegates choose to back McCain, that will put McCain within 78 delegates of the total 1,191 needed to secure the nomination. This will likely lessen Mike Huckabee’s influence and make it unlikely he will get the VP nod. (Huckabee currently has 217 delegates.) Hopefully, this will leave McCain free to choose a conservative running mate.
Unfortunately, a brokered convention is not in the cards. I was hoping for a deadlocked, embattled GOP convention in which no consensus could be reached. In my vision, all the current candidates would be scrapped, and delegates would choose a new candidate … a conservative candidate. Alas, it was not be. Instead, we must be content with such campaign slogans as “He’s a little better than Hillary!”
