DC Gun Buy-Back Program a Joke

The District of Columbia held a “Gun Amnesty” Event on Saturday, and collected guns at local churches, no questions asked. They offered:

  • $100 for assault-style rifles and automatic/semi-automatic pistols
  • $50 for revolvers, Derringers, rifles and shotguns
  • $10 for air/BB/pellet guns

Over 350 guns were turned over to authorities in exchange for money.

Some critics of gun buy-back programs say they’re a waste of tax payer money, and really are not an effective gun control measure.

One man, interviewed by Fox News, helped bolster this claim. Jim Snyder said this after turning in a gun:

I figured it was a good opportunity to have the District of Columbia help subsidize me buying a real gun.

Hmmm, I wonder why a gun buy-back program is even necessary in an area with the most stringent gun control laws in the country. Curiously, Washington D.C. is known as the “nation’s murder capital”. Could it be strict gun control laws only penalize law abiding citizens and not criminals who willingly disregard said laws?

Whole Foods Worker Fired for Stopping Shoplifter

Grocery worker John Schultz was fired for stopping a shoplifter. The saga began when Schultz heard a manager calling out for help in stopping a shoplifter. A group responded, but the shoplifter got away. Schultz caught up to him and held him, intending to wait until police arrived. Schultz released the man upon the manager’s insistence, and the shoplifter got away.

Schultz was called to the store’s office on Christmas Eve, and was fired, apparently for violating a company policy prohibiting employees from touching a customer.

He says he would do it again though. John Schultz said this about his experience:

The fact I worked at the store is coincidental, If I had went over to the book store on my break and they were being ripped off, I would have helped them.

Whole Foods spokeswoman Kate Klotz said this about the incident:

The fact that he touched him, period, is means for termination.

I think it sets a bad precedent when a person gets punished for doing the right thing. More and more people will hesitate before helping someone in distress.

And since when is a shoplifter a customer?

I believe Fred Thompson is a strong leader, with consistent conservative principles. Fred has plenty of experience in the area of national security. Thompson served as counsel to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and he is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. One particular Thompson statement really helped me visualize what’s at stake:

“And I would ask people to think one thing before they cast a vote. When our worst enemy is sitting down at the negotiating table thinking about what he can do to the United States of America, who do you want sitting on our side of the table representing you? That’s probably the guy you ought to elect president.”

Maybe it’s unfair, but when I picture Mike Huckabee with Ahmadinejad, I imagine Mike giving him a big hug. I am not sure certain Huckabee has the courage and steely resolve to do what is needed to protect us from Islamic extremists. These candidates are competing to become Commander-in-Chief … not Preacher-in-Chief or Mr. Congeniality. Mike said this about GITMO recently:

This Chick’s For Fred: Part 2

On the issue of life Fred Thompson is second to none. He has more endorsements from pro-life organizations than any other candidate. Thompson supports actively working toward the reversal of Roe v Wade so decisions on abortion will return to the states. While abortion would not be banned nationally, legislatures in each state could fight to ban or place limits on abortion. Many who support abortion rights don’t support abortion on demand, for any reason, at any time. According to USA Today analysis of data from the Alan Guttmacher Institute, these would be the likely statistics if Roe v Wade is overturned: 22 states would enact significant restriction on abortion, 16 states would continue current access to abortions, and 12 would fall into middle ground. Under this scenario, pro-lifers wouldn’t win every battle in every state, but countless lives would be saved.
