Fred Thompson Withdraws
Here is a short statement Fred Thompson released on his website:
Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.
In light of this news, my heart is very heavy. Fred Thompson didn’t run out of lust for power or personal ambition. He ran because he cares about this nation and sees the challenges on the horizon. I don’t mourn for Fred, as he has a full life beyond all this. Instead, I mourn for this nation. Who will carry the torch of conservative principles now?
This is off topic from your last post, but I think you would find it interesting, our would-be govenor is rumored to be Romney’s running mate. I think this will kill any chances that Romney has as GOP candidate. I just thought I would post this and see if anyone has any comments on the matter.
Here is an article about Governor Blunt. Apparently, he has decided not to run for re-election, which is causing some to speculate he may be Romney’s running mate.

I’m not sure how this would effect Romney’s chances. Matt Blunt is only 37 years old, so he wouldn’t bring a lot of experience. I’m not sure if two governors on the ticket would be ideal, especially since neither has foreign policy experience. Maybe they’re going for the youth factor to combat Obama’s appeal. Also a plus for Romney, Blunt does has a very conservative record, aside from his regrettable support for embryonic stem cell research
Of course, all this is just idle speculation, because we don’t know who the final nominees will be yet. It looks to me Mitt Romney has a pretty good shot at the Republican nomination now. I would guess Hillary will be the nominee for the Democrats. I wonder if she would actually choose Obama for a running mate. She doesn’t seem to like him much, but will probably choose him for political expediency.
